Getting the Gear Ready

I have almost all the gear ready for the trip. from left-right, top row: camping cookwear(pot, bowl, spork, lighter), leatherman multitool, phone, Garmin Etrex GPS, bike pump, allan keys/chain tool, bike tools, keys, chain lubricant, solar charger, jeans/hoodie, shorts(2)/biking pants//underwear(2)/socks(3). Second row from top: camping towels, first aid kit, bear spray, chargers/batterypacks/cords, hadlebar bag, biking gloves/wool gloves/toque, t-shirts(3)/long sleeve shirt.Third row from the top: bike lock/cable, travel journal, pencil case, guidebook, passport/wallet, helmet, rechargeable bike lights, sunglasses. Bottom row: sleeping bag, tent, bungee cords, 35 gallon panniers(2). I still need to pick up a couple extra bike tubes and patch kit, duct tape, and basic toiletries. Let me know if you think I'm missing anything.

Not pictured below are the two water bottles that will be in the holders. Even with the extra items I still need to pick up, there is still surprisingly plenty of room left in the second pannier. And in case you were wondering, the bike when fully loaded weighs in at 64 lbs.

  1. What sort of tent are you using? I've got a Hennessey Hammock I intend to use (supplemented by hotel reward point stays) when I finally undertake this epic. Also, 35 gallon or litre paniers?

  2. I have a 4 season two person tent, and I'm using 35 gallon panniers.

  3. Am I blind or did you pack rain gear? And something winter-weight - I've done rides in June even in Ontario that became dangerously cold. You won't regret it!

    1. Also - I've decided against rain gear. I'll probably write a separate post about that.

  4. I'm not expecting temperatures to dip any lower tha -5, and I've already tested out the clothing in that weather. Also, the camping gear is 4 season so I'm not worried. It won't be 5 star conditions, but it's worth saving the weight of bulky winter gear.

  5. I love how you can reduce your needs to this. Will you be using your phone for posting? What about books?
